  Good Bilge Pump Practice

 (Courtesy of Cleghorn Waring)

  • Use pipes of internal diameter at least as large as the nominal bore of the pump ports.
  • Fit an adequately sized suction strainer to protect the pump form debris.
  • Make sure that it is accessible and remember to inspect periodically.
  • Remember that small electric submersible pumps are rarely useful at more than 1.2m head. Medium/large submersibles are less effective above about 2m head.
  • Install electric self priming pumps as low as possible, consistent with a dry, ventilated and accessible location.
  • Keep suction pipework as short and straight as possible. Use reinforced hose that will not deform or collapse under suction conditions. Check that all connections are airtight.
  • Avoid multiple valved inlet pipework if possible. If unavoidable ,take extra care to make all joints airtight. To avoid airlocks , make sure that the inlet pipework rises all the way to the pump.
